Keyboard Final

The UK's brightest and best musical talent are showcased as the search begins for the BBC Young Musician 2016. Clemency Burton-Hill and Alison Balsom - herself a finalist in 1998 - present highlights from the first category final in this year's coverage.

Five exceptional players perform music from Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin in the keyboard final. The competitors are: 19-year-old Royal Academy of Music student Yuanfan Yang; 17-year-old A level student Tomoka Kan; from Salford 15-year-old Jackie Campbell; Julian Trevelyan, who is 17 and comes from St Albans; and this year's youngest category finalist, 13-year-old Harvey Lin from Berkshire.

Filmed at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff the programme includes profiles of the competitors, extensive highlights of their performances and behind-the-scenes access. We also catch up with Martin James Bartlett, the winner of BBC Young Musician 2014, to find out what impact the competition has had on his career to date.

Woodwind Final

The competition continues. Clemency Burton-Hill and Alison Balsom host as five young musicians perform in the woodwind final. This year's all-female line-up features flautists Lucy Driver, Marie Sato and Joanne Lee, saxophonist Jess Gillam, who reached this stage of the competition last time around, and recorder player Polly Bartlett. Repertoire ranges from Telemann to Dutilleux.

All of the woodwind finalists will be hoping to convince the jury that they deserve a place in the overall semi-final.

Percussion is in the spotlight as five gifted performers take centre stage. Clemency Burton-Hill and celebrated trumpeter Alison Balsom present extended highlights from the percussion final, with modern masterpieces from the 20th and 21st centuries. There's even a world premiere with a piece composed by British composer Jan Bradley especially for one of tonight's competitors.

The five hoping to win and claim their place in the BBC Young Musician semi-final are: 18-year-old Tom Pritchard from Yorkshire; 16-year-old Joe Parks from Bromley; from Bulgaria but now studying in the UK, 17-year-old Hristiyan Hristov; from Crewe, 15-year-old Matthew Brett; and 16-year-old Andrew Woolcock from Preston.

Brass Final

The search for the next BBC Young Musician continues. With the winners of the keyboard, woodwind and percussion categories already decided, we now to turn to brass.

Taking us behind the scenes for all the news, highlights and some inspiring music-making - featuring a wide range of repertoire from 17th-century Baroque to 21st century film scores - are Clemmie Burton-Hill and trumpeter Alison Balsom, herself a BBC Young Musician Finalist in 1998.

Hoping to impress the jury are two trombonists, 17-year-old Gemma Riley and 16-year-old Sam Dye, 18-year-old French horn player Ben Goldscheider and two trumpet players, 18-year-old Zak Eastop and 17-year-old Zoe Perkins. Only one will make it through to the semi-final and move a step closer to claiming the much sought after title of BBC Young Musician 2016.

Strings Final

Four places in the BBC Young Musician 2016 semi-final have been claimed, with the winners of the keyboard, woodwind, percussion and brass categories having already earned their spot. Who will join them there from the strings final? In a hotly contested round, five talented young string players give their all, performing music ranging from Bach to Faure, Rachmaninov to Saint-Saens. Expect musical fireworks and technical brilliance.

The finalists are 17-year-old violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones from Cardiff; 16-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason from Nottingham; violinist Louisa Staples who is 16 and from London; also 16, cellist Joe Pritchard from Somerset; and completing the line-up is 16-year-old violinist Stephanie Childress from London.

BBC Young Musician 2016 reaches its penultimate stage - the semi-final. Clemency Burton-Hill and trumpet player Alison Balsom, herself a BBC Young Musician Finalist in 1998, present extensive highlights from the semi-finalists' performances at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.

In the category finals we were treated to some remarkable performances from 25 talented and dedicated young musicians. Now the winners of the keyboard, woodwind and percussion finals- Jackie Campbell, Jess Gillam, Andrew Woolcock - are joined by the winners from the brass and strings categories to compete against each other for just three places in the grand final at the Barbican Hall in London.

Making the all-important decisions are the judges: Meurig Bowen, Director of the Cheltenham Music Festival, Alpesh Chauhan, Assistant Conductor at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Huw Humphreys, Head of Music at London's Barbican Centre, and Chair of the jury across the category finals, composer Dobrinka Tabakova.

Jazz Award Final

Jazz Award Final

BBC Young Musician turns the spotlight on the world of jazz, as five outstanding young players compete in the BBC Young Musician jazz final. With an 'access all areas' backstage pass, Josie D'Arby and singer, pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe present coverage of the final.

On stage: saxophone and recorder player Tom Ridout, his sister Alexandra Ridout on trumpet, pianists Elliott Sansom and Noah Stoneman, and saxophonist Tom Smith. They are joined by one of the country's finest jazz bands, the Gwilym Simcock Trio.

The result: some remarkable performances that make you forget that all the competitors are all between 15 and 21 years of age. One of them will walk away as the winner of the BBC Young Musician jazz award.

Making the all-important decision is a panel of judges with all the right credentials: pianist and broadcaster Julian Joseph, saxophonist Tim Garland, composer and pianist Zoe Rahman, trumpeter Bryon Wallen and singer and composer Gwyneth Herbert.

After a series full of thrilling performances, BBC Young Musician 2016 reaches its conclusion. Now just three exceptional musicians remain, as the Barbican Hall in the City of London plays host to the final. In this legendary venue, three finalists perform a full concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the celebrated British conductor Mark Wigglesworth.

Clemency Burton-Hill, trumpet player Alison Balsom - herself a finalist in 1998 - and Josie D'Arby present the coverage from what's sure to be a breathtaking climax to this year's competition, bringing behind-the-scenes insights and providing analysis of each performance.

We also hear from pianist Martin James Bartlett, who won this competition two years ago, and performs the first movement from Prokofiev's Piano Concerto no 3. Who will follow in his footsteps and become the winner of BBC Young Musician 2016?
