In deze aflevering blikt Belga Sport terug op de glorietijd van een hele generatie Belgische langeafstandlopers in de jaren ‘60 en ‘70. Veertig jaar geleden was België korte tijd een land van langeafstandslopers. Gaston Roelants, Karel Lismont, Miel Puttemans, Willy Polleunis: hun namen hadden bijna dezelfde weerklank als die van Merckx en De Vlaeminck. Als op zondag de cross naar het dorp kwam, was het een hele dag feest. De zware parcoursen waren op het lijf geschreven van tientallen plattelandsjongens die elkaar ieder weekend de duvel aandeden en daardoor niet alleen steeds beter werden, maar ook ontsnapten aan de benepenheid van de provincie. Gaston Roelants, een boerenzoon uit Brabant, stak het vuur aan de lont. Toen hij in 1964 Olympisch kampioen op de steeple werd en huilend vanuit het verre Tokio het vaderland te woord stond, voelden velen het kriebelen.
