Vraag een Parijzenaar naar de meest bekende Belgische sporter en de kans is groot dat hij antwoordt: driver Jos Verbeeck. De Winnetou uit Wolfsdonk, een gehucht van Aarschot, heeft vier keer de Prix d'Amérique gewonnen op de legendarische baan van Vincennes. Hoger kun je in de drafsport niet reiken. Het is voorgoed gedaan met de duffe sfeer op de Belgische renbanen als de onstuimige Verbeeck daar begin jaren tachtig voor het eerst verschijnt. "Hij was direct een winnaar", zegt zijn collega-driver en inspirator Marcel Martens. Verbeeck, wiens talent onmiskenbaar is, bluft zich een weg naar de top. Als de Belgische drafsport eind jaren tachtig door een fraudeschandaal implodeert, neemt Verbeeck de wijk naar Frankrijk, dé drafnatie in Europa. Verbeeck is 32, spreekt geen woord Frans en heeft zijn bezittingen in twee koffers gepropt. "Ik ging gewoon op avontuur", blikt Verbeeck terug.
