In the first episode retired magician Alexander Blacke must discover how a fellow magician, The Great Gasperini, can be submerged in an airtight container underwater for one of his escapologist routines, yet emerge dead, still sealed inside, with a bullet hole in his body!

The Blackes search for a 10-ton statue that was stolen from a Manhattan museum.

Knave of Diamonds, Ace of Hearts
Leonard finds himself facing a murder charge after pulling a job Alexander turned down. The elderly Blacke had accepted to test a new security system at a jeweler's and ended up accused of murder when a corpse turned up inside a vault. This episode involves a planned jewel heist, father-son rivalry and bungling police work. Alex is coerced into solving the mystery of what happened to Czar Nicholas' diamonds and who killed the jeweler.

Revenge of the Esperanza
Leonard is in Florida to raise money for a brother and sister who think they know the whereabouts of a sunken treasure.

Death Goes to the Movies
While working as a consultant for a movie, Alex gets an added responsibility when the producer is murdered in an editing room.

Vanishing Act
Leonard takes Alex to the town where he met Alex's mother, but there is a problem: the town's population has vanished overnight. A corpse and the site where a man was murdered seem to vanish without leaving a trace. After seeing strange lights in the sky, the Blackes have reason to suspect that aliens might have abducted a woman.

Prisoner of Paradise
Alex is hired to escort a notorious criminal who always escapes from his captors. Alexander (Hal Linden) suspects a businessman, Granville Stuart (Peter Haskell), of being a murderer. However, this master of escape is later believed to have leaped to his death from a heavily guarded bell-tower cell.

Alex comes to the aid of his former assistant, Louise Richmond, whose husband has blown the whistle on a conspiracy between his company and the Government. When Alex suspects General Wersching (J.D. Cannon) is accepting bribes from a corporation doing business with the government, he enlists Wersching's assistant, Major Crawford (Nancy Grahn) to help him uncover the truth.

Forced Landing
A plane with no one aboard lands near a ghost town that Leonard recently won in a poker game.

Last Flight to Moscow
Alex is enlisted to help a diplomat's wife defect from the Soviet embassy.

A Friendly Game of Showdown
Leonard and Alex (Hal Linden) hatch a swindle to rescue an old friend's toy company after a rival steals his revolutionary robot prototype.

It's a Jungle Out There
Alex and Leonard aid of a U.S. diplomat who is being blackmailed by a crooked Monte Carlo casino owner who is selling technological secrets.

Wax Poetic
A Poe manuscript is apparently purloined from Alex's apartment during an auction that leaves two participants breathing nevermore.
