Season 1
Hoogvliegers tells the story of Rutger, Guus, and Laila. We follow them during their years of heavy training to become a fighter pilot in the Royal Dutch Air Force, and we're with them when they finally go on a dangerous mission in the Middle East. We stand close to these friends in their eventful journey to adulthood, we share their camaraderie, their grief, their joy, love, and fear, in times of peace and times of war.

Suicide Watch
The tensions between the Netherlands and Russia are rising when the separist leader Branko Titov has been arrested. Meanwhile Rutger reports himself to the Royal Military Academy. Together with Guus and Leyla, he will do his utmost best to complete his studies, but will he succeed in hiding his secret from the past?

Icarus
Rutger, Leyla and Guus are graduating from the Royal Military Academy and move on to become a fighter pilot in Woensdrecht. Meanwhile when Russia is testing the preparedness of the Royal Air Force, Rutger makes a dangerous decision. Due to this decision, reporter Julia is digging into his past.

Speak Up
After his dangerous manoeuvre to scare the Russians, Rutger suddenly became the hero of the country. All students are heading to Tucson, Arizona to receive their training from the legendary Lucky. Despite their rivalry, Rutger takes pity on Dennis, who slowly loses his confidence, with all consequences.

The legend of Jeremiah Weed
Rutger, Guus and Leyla start their impossible search for Dennis in the large dessert of Arizona and accidentally came across a large graveyard of discarded aircraft. In a remote bar, the old bar owner tells the story of the legend of Jeremiah Weed. Reporter Julia made contact with Rutger's sister and learns more and more about Rutger's secret.

Panda Diplomacy
After Dennis his funeral, Rutger is taken care of by Roderick Walema. When Rutger's dark past comes to the surface at the hands of reporter Julia, Roderick knows exactly how to help Rutger. Rutger, Guus & Leyla are departing to Tucson, Arizona.

Piano Burning
We are familiarizing ourselves with the young Leyla and her family in Istanbul. The story of Rutger's past and his unfortunate deed is being revealed by media, which has a surprising outcoming. Just like Guus, Rutger will fly a F-16: his lifelong dream. Leyla's dream falls to pieces.

Rien ne va plus
The conflict between Russia and the Netherlands ends in a cold war under a hot sun. Rutger and Guus go on a mission to Syria, where they are under great pressure. Guus saves Rutger through a brilliant maneuver with his F-16 but is shot down himself. Will he survive?

Heart attack
In Syria, everything that is available is being used in order to locate Guus. He seems to be alive and is captured by a group of rebels. Everything comes together in a blood-curdling apotheosis. Rutger ends up in a dangerous situation which will make clear whether he is a real hero or simply a loser.
