The Hebridean Way

Season 3Episode 130 minJan 5, 2023
The Hebridean Way

Join River City actor Iain Robertson as he embarks on the challenging 200-mile walk along the Hebridean Way, taking in its sights and sounds along the way.

Setting out from the beautiful white sands on the south beach of Vatersay, Iain and Mollie head north, visiting some moving monuments along the way, including the tribute to the tragic boat the Annie James, which perished in the cove next to the walk's official starting point.

In glorious sunshine, Iain and Molly cross the first of six causeways, arriving in Barra before heading straight up a 332-metre hill that offers tremendous views back down on Barra and across to Vatersay.

Iain ends his first day at an earlier point so that Molly can rest up. However, once she is suitably taken care of, Iain ventures out in the last of the light to explore the beach that he spied earlier, where he takes in the astonishing twilight.

With six miles out of the anticipated 200 under his belt, Iain sets off on his second day with friend Lynn McAdam. They visit Dun Bharpa, which is roughly 3,500 years old and thought to be the best preserved chambered cairn in the Western Isles.

After a short ferry ride, Iain is on Eriskay, which was memorialised at the fictional island of Toddy in Whisky Galore. Hitting the 23-mile mark, Iain visits an impressive monument to Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape ‘over the sea to Skye'.

Starting off on day four, Iain breaks out his packraft to have a paddle with Molly before visiting the ruins of Ormiclate Castle on South Uist, where he gets chatting to local crofter Alister MacKaskill about life on the island. Iain brings his day to a close at Howmore, where he notices that the local church appears to have a halo as a result of the early evening light.
