Thinking Outside The Box
Tom and Katey's kitchen has too many straight lines and not enough color. From the cold, white ceramic floor tiles to the dated brown cabinets to the fake beams on the ceiling, nothing flows. An oddly placed peninsula interrupts movement. Their cooktop is failing and their oven is worse. Alison's transformation starts by knocking down a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. A custom island adds work space and casual seating. White shaker cabinets brighten a dark corner. The focal point of the room is an upscale ocean-blue glass backsplash behind the range hood in oval mosaic pattern. Linear blue glass continues behind the sink, arranged in a simple brick pattern. A formerly unused wall is treated with shallow blue cabinets below a storage unit created from apple crates stained and installed by Tom and Alison. Marble countertops continue the natural, organic feeling. Katey helps Alison create a cornice board covered with cheery floral fabric in blue, green and brown hues.
