Lose Weight for Love - Season 1
Season 1
Episodes
Becky and Phil
In episode 1 we meet Becky and her partner Phil who are locked in a cycle of over-consumption that now threatens their relationship. Knocking back three litres of fizzy drinks a day, Phil's weight has yo-yoed from 15 to 30 stone, twice, whilst Becky caves in to any takeaway temptation.
Clinical psychologist, professor Tanya Byron and her team - fitness expert Rick Shakes-Braithwaite and Paul Dolan, professor of behavioural science at LSE - separate them for ten weeks in a bid to overhaul their habits. Phil discovers he has life-threatening blood pressure and the realisation hits him that without change he won't live to see his children grow up. While Rick guides Phil back to exercise to improve the health of his heart, Becky finds that the main thing getting in the way of sustaining her weight loss is a chronic lack of confidence. But half way through the programme, inexplicably Phil begins to resist the help. Tanya calls in behavioural scientist Professor Paul Dolan for radical mind-training.
Celena and Pete
Celena has put on a whopping five stone since she fell in love with Pete.
He does all the cooking and Celena can't get enough of his high-fat, high-sugar food. But her ballooning weight stops them from enjoying themselves; she won't go on holiday, have their son christened… or marry Pete.
Clinical psychologist Professor Tanya Byron and her team separate the couple for ten weeks in a bid to change their habits - for life. While fitness expert Rick Shakes-Braithwaite puts them on bespoke diet and fitness plans, Tanya delves into the psychological patterns that mean Pete keeps feeding the woman he loves - which stops Celena loving the woman she is.
After Tanya uncovers the source of Pete's hatred of vegetables, behavioural scientist Professor Paul Dolan attempts to retrain his taste buds with a daily dose of broccoli. Meanwhile, Tanya finds out how Celena's negative body-image is getting in her way - and tests the success of the project with a trip to a bridal shop.
Jane and Bob
In episode three we meet Bob and Jane, who are locked in a cycle of over-eating and excessive drinking that makes them so unhappy it is threatening to drive them apart.
Eating vast meals and drinking up to 25 bottles of wine a week has replaced having fun in their relationship. Over the past few years they have both piled on the pounds, and Bob readily admits that he no longer finds Jane attractive. Professor Tanya Byron and her team separate them for 10 weeks. She discovers that unhappiness sits at the root of Jane's drinking and arranges a meeting for Jane and her adult daughter to try and resolve a long-standing issue.
Meanwhile fitness expert Rick Shakes-Braithwaite introduces the couple to the fun of exercise and Bob, a former, semi-professional footballer, initially starts off enthusiastically. But mid-way through the experiment he's back at the pub with his old friends, ignoring advice from Professor Paul Dolan on controlled drinking. Will hearing his daughter's concern for his health, and a heart-to-heart with Rick about the importance of knuckling down in order to save his relationship do the trick?
Lisa and Steve
At over 22 stone Lisa is clinically obese, while Steve is suffering from type 2 diabetes - largely on account of all the cakes Lisa bakes as a way of showing her love for her husband.
Steve fears the couple will not grow old together, and Lisa has a more immediate sadness as her weight is preventing her from getting pregnant. Clinical Psychologist Tanya Bryon separates them for 10 weeks in a bid to rid them of their self-destructive behaviour. She discovers that a miscarriage Lisa had 10 years ago still haunts her and that a fear of failure is stopping her from losing weight.
Meanwhile, Rick confronts Steve about his chaotic eating habits and high blood sugar levels. Tanya takes him back to the school he was asked to leave as a teenager, to try and get to the heart of his continued refusal to follow rules. Will the couple change whilst they are apart so they can come back happier and healthier, to start the family they both dream of having?
