MOTD: UEFA Euro 2016 Highlights

The BBC will bring audiences a month-long festival of European football including every step of England, Wales and Northern Ireland's journeys at Euro 2016, alongside Europe's elite

Gary Lineker presents highlights from the opening game of Euro 2016, in which hosts France took on Romania at the Stade de France, Paris. The final will take place a month today in the same stadium, but before that, 50 matches will be fought out as teams strive to earn the right to be crowned European champions.

France won the tournament the last time they hosted it back in 1984, and would dearly love to repeat that feat. The man in charge of Les Bleus is Didier Deschamps, who knows what it is like to captain France to World Cup and Euros success – can he repeat that feat as a manager?

Joachim Low's side were World Cup winners two years ago in Brazil, but they have not been at their best since and have suffered a string of defeats, most notably against England in a friendly in March. Group C opponents Ukraine qualified for France via the play-offs. Gary is joined in the studio by Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry. Commentary comes from Jonathan Pearce and Danny Murphy.

MOTD Live - Republic of Ireland v Sweden

Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the Euro 2016 group match between the Republic of Ireland and Sweden at the Stade de France.

The Republic of Ireland are taking part in their third European Championship campaign, and will be hopeful of winning only their second ever finals match – the last was a famous victory against England at Euro '88.

Like the Irish, Sweden had to come through the play-offs to qualify for this tournament, with the goals of brilliant striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic proving decisive. With tricky games against Belgium and Italy to come in the group stage, both sides will be desperate to get off to a winning start. Alan Shearer and Kevin Kilbane provide studio analysis, with commentary from Jonathan Pearce and Mark Lawrenson.

MOTD Live - Belgium v Italy

Live coverage of the Euro 2016 match between Belgium and Italy, presented by Gary Lineker.

The clash at the Stade de Lyon should be one of the outstanding games of the group stage. The Belgians boast a very strong squad, featuring Premier League stars such as Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, and are among the tournament favourites.

Italy were runners-up at Euro 2012 and qualified for this tournament unbeaten. Under coach Antonio Conte – who will take over at Chelsea this summer – they are a side in transition. But the Azzurri backline, featuring legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and defensive stalwart Giorgio Chiellini, will be a tough nut to crack. Studio analysis comes from Thierry Henry and Gianluca Vialli, with commentary from Steve Wilson and Martin Keown.

There's also another chance to see full coverage of today's Euro 2016 group game between the Republic of Ireland and Sweden at the Stade de France later from 2am to 3.40am on BBC Two.

MOTD Live - Portugal v Iceland

Gary Lineker introduces live coverage of the Euro 2016 group game between Portugal and Iceland in Saint-Etienne.

Iceland are making their debut at a major tournament but their squad contains several talented players – such as Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was their top scorer in qualifying with six goals.

As ever, Portuguese hopes rest largely on the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid superstar has won virtually every conceivable honour at club level, but chances are running out for him to lift silverware with his country.

There's another chance to see full coverage of one of today's Euro 2016 group games later on BBC Two from 0200 to 0340.

MOTD Live - Russia v Slovakia

Dan Walker presents live coverage as Russia and Slovakia, both group rivals of England and Wales, battle it out in Lille.

Russia, the 2018 World Cup hosts, are looking to re-establish themselves on the international scene. They were inaugural European champions in 1960 as the Soviet Union and have finished as runners-up on three occasions.

Slovakia are appearing at their first European Championship. They impressed on their last showing at a major tournament, beating defending champions Italy at the 2010 World Cup en route to the last 16.

Martin Keown, Robbie Savage and Jermain Jenas provide expert analysis, while Guy Mowbray and Mark Lawrenson supply the commentary.

MOTD Live - England v Wales

The BBC bring live coverage of the unmissable moment of the opening week as England face Wales in a blockbuster home nations clash.

The mouth-watering encounter is one of the most intriguing matches of the group stages, and has been eagerly awaited since the draw was made last December. Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane will be among those on display for England, while Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey are set to feature for Wales.

England have won the last four encounters between the sides since Wales claimed a 1-0 victory in 1984.

Gary Lineker leads the presentation.

Year 2016Episode 46135 min

MOTD Live - Czech Republic v Croatia

Gary Lineker is joined by studio guests Thierry Henry, Danny Murphy and Neil Lennon for live coverage of the Group D game between Czech Republic and Croatia in Saint Etienne

Croatia have twice reached the quarter-finals, on debut in 1996 and again in 2008, and they boast one of the strongest midfields in world football, headlined by Real Madrid's Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona. However, they struggled to qualify for Euro 2016 and new coach Ante Cacic remains an unpopular choice with the majority of fans, despite making the best start of any Croatia head coach.

The Czech Republic are ever-presents at the European Championship since independence and, in the absence of any true stars, coach Pavel Vrba has instilled a team ethic into his attack-minded, possession-based side.

Commentary comes from Steve Wilson and Kevin Kilbane.

MOTD Live: Iceland v Hungary

Mark Chapman introduces live coverage of the Euro 2016 group game between Iceland and Hungary at the iconic Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

With a population of just 330,000, Iceland is the smallest country to have qualified for a European Championship or World Cup. But they were hugely impressive in qualifying, beating the Netherlands home and away and also defeating the Czech Republic and Turkey.

Hungary were once one of European football's heavyweights - the ‘Magical Magyars' that famously taught England a football lesson at Wembley in 1953, and they were World Cup finalists in 1938 and 1954. Though unfancied this summer, they will be hoping to recapture past glories.

John Hartson is amongst the studio guests, while commentary comes from Steve Wilson and Robbie Savage.

MOTD Live: Portungal v Austria

Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the Euro 2016 group match between Portugal and Austria at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Portugal are consistent performers at the European Championship, reaching at least the quarter-finals in each of the last five tournaments. They were beaten finalists as hosts in 2004, and suffered heartbreak again in 2012, losing on penalties to Iberian rivals Spain. While Cristiano Ronaldo remains Portugal's key attacking weapon, a new wave of young talent - including Renato Sanches and Joao Mario - will also be looking to make their mark on the international stage.

However, Austria will be tough opponents: they qualified unbeaten, winning nine of their 10 games, and boast midfield talents including Bayern Munich's David Alaba and Stoke's Marko Arnautovic.

Studio analysis comes from Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand, with commentary from Guy Mowbray and Martin Keown.

MOTD Live: Switzerland v France

The two sides also met at the group stage of the 2014 World Cup, with France recording an impressive 5-2 victory - although both teams went on to reach the knock-out stage.

The Swiss laboured in qualification for Euro 2016, losing home and away to England, so a win against their neighbours and tournament hosts would be a real coup for Vladimir Petkovic's side. France, meanwhile, will be eager to finish top of the group - if at all possible - as it could mean they avoid facing a fellow heavyweight in the last 16.

MOTD Live: Hungary v Portugal

Portugal have reached at least the quarter-finals in each of the last five tournaments and boast the most celebrated European player in the modern game, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain could make a record 17th appearance in the European Championship finals in this game.

Hungary is competing in their first major tournament for 30 years, having come through a disjointed and chaotic qualifying campaign to progress via the play-offs under new coach Bernd Storck. The German has attempted to instil a more attacking approach from his side, with captain Balazs Dzsudzsak as instrumental for Hungary as Ronaldo is for his country.

Simon Brotherton and Martin Keown provide the commentary.
