Poppy is refusing to celebrate her 18th birthday despite being enroute to Barcelona with Will and Lorna, a combination that spells out late nights and hangovers. As it is she disembarks with a black eye to rival anything in a boxing ring and is even more determined to get an early night in front of the box. However she hasn't reckoned on the power of the two combined, and succumbs to Lorna's high-camp artistry with a make-up brush and reluctantly accompanies them to El Shafto to watch a drag act. To her dismay and intense embarrassment The Goldenboys pluck her out of the crowd, and her humiliation is compounded as she has to crawl off the stage on her knees, unintentionally attached to a man covered in not much more than gold paint. Meanwhile a flight from Monastir returns just after take-off and is grounded because of a health scare.
