Episodes
Hadži Trifun
Hadži Trifun is a prominent Serbian merchant, who strives to maintain peace with the Turkish authorities, but also to maintain his reputation and influence in Vranje, an important Turkish city near the border with liberated Serbia. Trifun's troubles are not only caused by the powerful Turkish beys, but also by his own family. Tasana, the widow of Đorđe, the son of Haji Trifun, can't stand being locked in a dark room any longer. And several men were charmed by her beauty. Haji Trifun's second son, Mita, is not overly interested in trade, while the third son, Jovca, wants to drive his wife, the mother of his two children, to a monastery and marry for the third time.
The bell
Kolj is a community leader in an Albanian mountain village. He did a favor to his friend, the rich merchant from Vranje, Haji Trifun, which is related to dark political affairs, but refused the gifts he offered him. He is already asking that he, Kolj, tell him what he wants when he likes it.
Haji Trifun is not happy about that, because he does not know what he can expect from Kolje in an agreement for which he does not know the payment. When Kolj finally tells him what he wants from him, Haji Trifun is faced with a big dilemma that can seriously shake his family.
Tashana
Hadji Trifun tries to justify the decision to hand over his daughter-in-law, Tasana, the widow of his late son Djordje, to Kolja, the leader of the Albanian community who lives in the mountains near Vranje.
Haji Trifun's wife, Kata, does not agree with this, but he convinces her that it is the best way to calm down Tashana, who is causing anxiety among men who are infatuated with her beauty.
Bishop Miron came to Tašana, who, because of her refusal, decided to become a monk. Myron asks her to repent. She refuses to submit and drinks wine in defiance of her surroundings. The fact that the local barber, Turčin Saroš, is also in love with Tašana brings new turmoil into Tašana's life.
Jovca
After the death of Hadji Trifun, his son Jovca took over the care of the family estate. Haji Trifun's second son, Efendi Mita, is careless about his inheritance. He goes on long trips, trying to escape from himself and his responsibilities to his family.
A chance meeting with a former maid, Stojna, will awaken old feelings and sins of the past. On the other hand, Jovca patiently acquires wealth and has a special love for his daughter, Vaska. He dedicates a much smaller harvest to his sons, Mitket and Arsa, whose mother Andja he sent to the monastery.
Jovca's sons
There were major riots in Vranje and its surroundings in 1870. The bandits who make a mess wherever they appear kill the local muslim, Ibrahim Bey. Heartless Tone beat his wife Stojna and threw her out on the street. She is taken care of by the maid Stana, whose illegitimate daughter Stojna is, but she was never allowed to admit it to her.
On the other hand, Jovca wants Mitka's son to compensate him in trade. He wants to spend more time at home and devote full attention to his favorite, daughter Vaska. Mitke is ready to venture into trade, but regardless, Jovca is distrustful of his abilities.
A proposal
Tasana's son, Vasilije, suffers from chest pain, just like his late father, Đorđe. In his dying frenzy, Vasilije calls out to Sofka, his uncle's sister. Vasilije dies. During that time, merchant Isa Surdučki came to Vranje, to his old friend, Jovča, for the wedding of his sons, Mitket and Arsa.
During the wedding celebration, Isa persuades Jovca to organize the Serbs to rebel against Turkish rule. Jovca is not sure that military skirmishes would be good for maintaining his business. When he hears that his nephew, Vasilije, has passed away, Jovca interrupts the wedding festivities.
Yusuf
Vaska left the house because her father, Jovca, threw her out of the house when he found out that she became pregnant with a servant. Regardless, Jovca goes to her dilapidated house and observes it, for a long time, in silence. Jovca's son Mitke tries to cheer him up because it's Easter. Jovci is not ready to celebrate with his family. He curses anyone who wants to help Vaska.
Mitke continues with his love adventures. He meets Redžepovica when her husband, Redžep aga, is away from home for a long time. One evening, however, Redzep aga with an armed escort entered the room where Mitke and Redzepovica were.
Time of war
In 1876, the echoes of the war between the Serbs and the Turks were felt in Vranje. Captain Mustafa appears in Vranje, at Efendi Mita's house, and gives his daughter, Sofka, a revolver, saying that through it he will know who visited him.
When Efendi Mita sees that revolver, he realizes that it is Turcin Saros, his brother who fled from Vranje more than twenty-five years ago, because he was afraid of blood revenge.
Saros headed towards Tasana's house, the woman he was passionately in love with in his youth. When he sees Tasana, his pain increases when he realizes that she does not recognize him.
Sofka
In 1880, Vranje has been part of Serbia for two years, because the Turkish army was expelled from the city.
Boss Mladen also returned to Vranje. He inquires about the whereabouts of his brother, Ahmet, from whom he fled from Vranje in fear of blood revenge, because he failed to save the life of Ahmet's nephew, Jusuf.
Efendi Mita also returned to Vranje, who spent three years in prison because of the false accusation that he killed his good friend, Saroš. Efendi Mita has completely failed and sees the only solution for himself in marrying his daughter Sofka to a boy, Tomcha, the son of the boss Mladen, for the sake of money. Efendi Mita's relatives do not like that idea at all.
A dead bird
Little Tomcha has grown into a handsome young man and Sofka is now enjoying her marriage with him. A dark shadow is cast on their relationship by the fact that Sofka's father, Efendi Mita, expects Tomcha to give him money.
He humiliates Tomcha by telling him that he only gave Sofka to him for money. Tomcha took out his anger on Sofka. An angry Tomcha goes to a pub and there he sees young Koštana, who sings beautifully. Koštana wins Tomčina, but also the attention of numerous residents of Vranje who enjoy her song.
Tomcha is ready to buy Koštana, but she tells him that if she were to lose her freedom, she would be just a dead bird. Koštana's voice continues to captivate everyone who sees and hears her - until tragedy strikes.
