Pilot
There is no one who understands the power of setting an innocent person free more than Madeline. At age 18, she was wrongfully convicted, along with her brother, Levi, in a sensational murder case that made her an infamous media obsession, a household name and a national cause célèbre. Madeline runs the firm with her partner, Easy Boudreau, the very lawyer who helped set her free after 10 years in prison. Their team also includes investigator Bodie Quick and communications director Violet Price, who runs a true-crime podcast that follows each investigation. While a hero and a victim to some, Madeline's bold and bullish tactics earn her a number of enemies – especially Gore Bellows, the prosecutor who initially put her away and still believes in her guilt. Despite Bellows' ceaseless quest to see her behind bars again, Madeline will continue to defend others, even as she fights to maintain her innocence and searches for the real killer in her own case.
The Burden of Truth
The Injustice Defense Group opens a case with Tamara Folsom, a rape victim convicted unjustly of murder. In addition to Tamara's case, Madeline comes to Levi's defense after he lands himself in hot water, but she uncovers a secret about his past that makes her question him. Meanwhile, Easy struggles to balance his work and family life.
A Minor Confession
Easy's church recruits the team to retry the case of William Hurston, a man convicted of murder at the age of 14 due to a coerced confession. Meanwhile, Bellows retaliates against Madeline using Rosemary's family. The William's case resonates with Easy as he tries to connect with his teenage son, Michael, and Madeline finds a new lead in the investigation of Rosemary's death.
The Shame Game
When Madeline takes on the case of Sarah Bukhari, a woman sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering her newborn child, Easy has a dilemma deciding between his faith and doing the right thing. Meanwhile, Gore Bellows continues in his crusade to hinder Madeline's pursuit of justice, while Madeline uncovers a new lead that puts her one step closer to the truth.
Cross to Bear
When a white supremacist begs the Injustice Defense Group to help him overturn his wrongful conviction, the team clashes over whether they should take his case. Despite the team's objections, Madeline is determined to prove his innocence. Bellows approaches an ethical crossroad in his race and must make a campaign-changing decision. Meanwhile, Levi continues to impulsively investigate who framed him for Rosemary's death.
A CinderHella Story
The Injustice Defense Group takes on the case of a girl convicted for the murder of her mother. Meanwhile, Madeline is trapped in a whirlwind of drama, trying to stop Bellows, maintaining her relationship with Dylan, while simultaneously finding out about a shocking piece of news about a former classmate.
Living and Dying in East Cleveland
Madeline takes a road trip alongside civil rights activist Amina Jackson, to fight for justice for Davon Watkins, a man on death row for killing a police officer. Meanwhile, Madeline attempts to save Levi from another sticky situation, while Bellows and Sanchez deliberate re-opening the case against them both.
The Struggle for Stonewall
The team tries to exonerate Cindy Whitman, a transwoman who is wrongfully convicted of murdering her fellow trans-friend and activist, Vanessa. Meanwhile, Violet has guest star NPR's Ira Glass on her podcast, and Bellow's latest campaign manager finds new evidence in the Rosemary's murder case. Inspired by the cast, Madeline embraces a part of her identity she once hid from her family.
Acceptable Losses
When the Injustice Defense Group is approached to exonerate a former frat boy, Daniel Hernandez , who is charged with rape and murder, a turn in Davon Watkins' case forces Madeline to head back to Ohio, leaving Easy and Bodie to solve this case alone before Easy's mentor, Judge Fry. Meanwhile, Bellows struggles with the values of his campaign, Levi follows up with a high school classmate to find out more about Rosemary's past and Wren is up for parole.
SEAL Team Deep Six
When a Navy SEAL is charged with murdering her superior, Madeline and the team are determined to prove her innocence. Levi presses harder for insight on Rosemary's life in high school, as Bellows takes a drastic step in re-examining her murder.
Shaken
The team takes on the case of a mother, Gabrielle Parcell, who is serving a life sentence for shaking her infant daughter, leading to her death. Meanwhile, Levi and Madeline uncover more truths about Rosemary's past and their high school class, while Bellows and his team continue their mission to send Madeline back to prison.
In Defense of Madeline Scott, Part 1
Easy takes on an immigration case to help a young DREAMer, Hector Costa, who was convicted of murder. Madeline, Bodie, Wren, Levi and Violet double down on their investigation into who killed Rosemary. Meanwhile, the showdown between Madeline and Bellows begins.
In Defense of Madeline Scott, Part 2
With Madeline's freedom at stake, Easy's defense hits a bump in the road. The team must band together to focus on solving Rosemary's murder once and for all before time runs out. Meanwhile, as Bellows closes in, new evidence and old enemies come into play.
