The Biggest Loser - Season 12

Season 12

The Biggest Loser: Battle of the Ages is the twelfth season of the NBC reality television series entitled The Biggest Loser. The contestants competed to win a $250,000 prize, which was awarded to John Rhode, the contestant with the highest percentage of weight lost. It premiered on September 20, 2011. Along with existing trainer Bob Harper, two new trainers joined this season. The 15 contestants this season were divided into three groups of five by their ages: those who are 30 and under were initially trained by Quince, those who are between 31–49 were initially trained by Harper, and those who are 50 and over were initially trained by Kournikova. This season marked the first time since season 5 that America did not have to vote on who would become a finalist. For the first time ever in Biggest Loser history, all 3 finalists were men.

Week 1

Season 12 kicks off with two new trainers - internationally renowned tennis star and certified trainer Anna Kournikova and top fitness expert Dolvett Quince - joining "Biggest Loser" favorite Bob Harper, and 15 contestants competing in a "Battle of the Ages" that will group contestants by age for the first time ever in the history of the show. Host Alison Sweeney tells the teams that they will make their first game-changing decision - who their trainer will be - in the order in which they finish the first challenge. Once each team chooses their trainer, "The Battle of the Ages" begins. The new contestants include Vinny Hickerson, who overcame a difficult childhood to become a successful Nashville recording artist, Antone Davis, a 447-pound father of four and former NFL player for the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons, and Bonnie Griffin, a 63-year-old grandmother of six who lost her home to Hurricane Katrina and lost her husband not long after.

Week 2

This week, the contestants learn that the gym will only be open three times a day, and each team will only have one two-hour time slot daily to work out. A donut temptation will help determine which team gets what slot, and then players have to learn to squeeze in their daily workouts just like in real life. Dr. Huizenga meets with contestants and their trainers for some sobering news about their medical conditions, and one player is shocked to learn what his real inner age is - and that he is the sickest person at the ranch. Then all the teams use their weight to move a ball through a maze over water in a wild challenge that proves to be way harder than it looks. Later, another player is sent home after the weigh-in yields a very surprising number for one contestant.

It's a NFL week at the ranch, and the competition to be the Biggest Loser of the week is fiercer than ever with the weigh-in winner getting an amazing prize - a VIP trip for two to the Super Bowl! One player really struggles emotionally this week, while another remains determined despite being partially sidelined with an injury. There's a grueling, calorie-burning competition among the three teams led by trainers Bob Harper, Anna Kournikova and Dolvett Quince. Week 5

One player is chosen to go home this week with their trainer, and get the coveted prize of immunity. But the prize doesn't look quite as desirable when the chosen contestant learns that their weight will be the only weight that counts for their team this week. Meanwhile, the players left at the ranch race through a maze to fill a large cylinder with soda in a night challenge that gives the winning team a great "pay it forward" prize. While the trainer who left the ranch devises grueling workouts for their player and worries about the fractured team they left behind, another trainer gets angry with a contestant who is constantly hiding behind humor. And one player boldly confronts her trainer about the way she is being treated. Later, another contestant is sent packing after a tense weigh-in reveals whether the player who went home lost enough to keep their team safe.

Week 6

For Halloween, the contestants face a crazy candy temptation and a very spooky challenge, while host Alison Sweeney and trainers Bob Harper, Anna Kournikova and Dolvett Quince get in the spirit by dressing up in Halloween costumes. First, the contestants learn they'll all be playing as one team this week and if they collectively lose 100 lbs., everyone will be safe for another week. A cauldron of candy hanging on a Biggest Loser scale tempts the players all week in more ways than one - for every pound of candy eaten, a pound will be deducted from the amount they all need to lose, up to 10 lbs. This week's challenge finds players racing through a haunted maze trying to collect as many apples as possible, with another weigh-in advantage - and disadvantage - hanging over them. With the trainers working out all of the players this week, one contestant has separation anxiety, and one trainer is not amused when the contestants play a Halloween trick on him. Plus, a big secret shared by two contestants is revealed. Later, one player ties a Biggest Loser record on the scale before another contestant is sent home.

Later, the new teams face their first challenge together - racing down a water slide on a hill to unscramble block letters that reveal the winning team's prize. Trainers Bob Harper, Anna Kournikova and Dolvett Quince each take their teams off the ranch to spice up their last chance workouts, and later, an especially emotional elimination follows a weigh-in revealing noteworthy results from the trainer/team switch.
