It's Ed's birthday and the day starts off with him catching a junkie breaking into the surgery.

It's the anniversary of the day Cathy gave birth to a stillborn baby, but her and Ed's grief is so private they can't even talk to each other about it.

Episode 3
Keelin has to face up to the fact she must give up her single lifestyle and move back home after she finds out about her mother has cancer.

Episode 4
Alex considers starting a thing with local barman, Michael. His carefree existence is abruptly shattered however by a needle stick incident. The thought of contracting Hep C turns Alex into an unrecognizable nervous wreck, much to everyone's surprise.

Episode 5
Susie's life is changed totally with the unexpected arrival of her teenage daughter Moya, who has decided to leave her home with Susie's parents and move in with her mother.

Episode 6
Dan, dogged by rumors that he botched an operation in the UK, becomes increasingly reliant on his drug habit. When approached by a female refugee who asks him to operate on her mutilated breast, he realizes he has lost his nerve.

Episode 7
Patrick's long-running case with Sean, plus his constant work load, takes its toll on his own mental health leads him to a breakdown.

Episode 8
Cathy and Ed attend Mary's funeral. The event gives them a chance to talk about their own grief over the baby and reconcile. Back at the clinic, confusion reigns while the doctors are away.

This series has won more Emmy awards than any other news program and in 2003, Don Hewitt, the creator (back in 1968), was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Emmy, along with the 60 Minute correspondents. Added to the 11 Peabody awards, this phenomenally long-lived series has collected 78 awards up to the 2005 season and remains among the viewers top choice for news magazine features.
