The Funeral
Alan is looking forward to Jean's funeral; his old mate Mick, Jean's ex, is coming over from Spain especially for it. Alan's wife Joyce isn't so happy - Mick has always been a bad influence. John's not happy either - he's been convinced that Mick has a thing for Maureen ever since a notorious holiday in Weymouth. And when Mick turns up, he's got a surprise for everyone - a 30-year-old Lithuanian wife who seems to understand Trevor more than his wife Carol ever has.
The Anniversary
It's Carol and Trevor's 40th wedding anniversary. Joyce has organised a celebratory lunch at an upmarket gastropub. Her carefully-laid plans are thrown when Maureen turns up with her mum Joan, who, like Dr Jekyll, is very nice until she's had a drink.
Then Carol announces she's made a decision that could ruin not just this anniversary but every one to come - unless Joyce and Maureen can change her mind in time.
The Patio
Thurnemouth Day is the day the town puts on its party hat and celebrates its history. It's a big day for Trevor, who's been given the honour of officiating at the opening ceremony - if Maureen can get him there on time.
Joyce has promised Carol a place in the Choral Society's choir for their production of the Messiah, but forgotten to clear it with the dragonlike musical director, and John's plans for a fishing trip are scuppered by Joan's dodgy plumbing...
The Not Retirement
Joyce is retiring. Although she was hoping for a big party at a country hotel, Alan has just invited their friends round to their house - but at least he has blown up some balloons.
Maureen is feeling trapped 'out in the sticks' and latches on to Joyce's hip new neighbours - a young couple and their two kids - who have just moved from London. John's made a 'tribute video' for Joyce's party, but has forgotten to ask Trevor for his tribute. Alan has some bad news for Joyce that might spoil her party. That is, unless she spoils it first by confronting their neighbour about her kids' bad behaviour...
The Sheltered Accommodation
Joyce and Alan have financial concerns and are considering downsizing; Joyce is desperate to make sure her friends don't find out yet, which would be easy enough if they weren't in the house while the estate agent looked around.
Maureen has finally bitten the bullet and decided to move her mum Joan into a residential home. Everyone thinks it's a good idea except Maureen's sister Pauline - three times married, 60 going on 16 - who thinks it's cruel.
John has a tricky problem of his own. The boys have convinced him that Pauline's 'touchy-feeliness', which John has put up with for 40-odd years, is actually a form of sexual harassment, and he's going to have to stop being the victim and speak up...
The Weekend Away
Every year, Joyce, Alan, Maureen, John, Trevor and Carol go away for a 60s weekend at a seaside resort. There are activities, dancing and old 60s acts playing live, but this year's different - Alan's messed up the booking and they've only got two rooms between six. John's feeling old and decides to prove he's not by trying to get to the top of the climbing wall, and Carol bumps into an old male friend who could throw her and Trevor's marriage back in the air...
